Worksheets with cvc words can be very useful in reinforcing phonemic understandings. Some tasks require learners to complete words and demonstrate their understandings by illustrating or reading the words to an adult. Others involve segmenting words into parts, and emphasise the rime or word family, such as ot, ag and so on. Repetition of these kinds of tasks, (with card or board games, worksheets and books), is an important part of the explicit teaching of phonemic strategies with beginning readers and writers. Students who develop automatic decoding skills with consonant-vowel-consonant words find it easier to become fluent readers, and this in turn, aids in the development of comprehension skills.
