Games with CVC words give young learners enjoyable experiences with the concepts of blending sounds together (at the beginning level), and developing automatic decoding skills. Once students can recognise the letter sounds and their symbols, they can begin to blend 2 or 3 sounds together to form words. The easiest words to practise this skill with are consonant-vowel-consonant words like r-u-g, f-a-n and p-o-t.
Students may need to begin with activities that only include some of the more common vowels and consonants (eg. at, am and ap words or et, ut and it words). Once confident with the idea of blending sounds, and the sounds made by all the letters (short vowels), students can move onto games that include a mixture of all vowels and consonants.
Most children enjoy the success they have when independently decoding their first words, and these games provide lots of opportunities to practise both blending and quick decoding. It doesn't take long before learners become automatic with c-v-c words and are moving on to blend more complex sounds.
